Press release and photos materials

The unification and cooperation issues constitute the most current topics in Ukraine nowadays, and art is no exception. The exhibition Dependence degree. Collective Practices of Young Ukrainian Artists 2000-2016 explores the phenomenon of forming and functioning of artistic circles. It presents the most interesting examples of collective Ukrainian art. The exhibition is organised by the European Capital of Culture Wroc│aw 2016 and BWA Wroc│aw gallery.

The Ukrainian art in Wroclaw will be represented by more than 25 artistic groups from the East: The starting point for the creation of this extremely interesting exhibition (interesting both from the artistic and sociological points of view) is the phenomenon of cooperation and collaboration. Together with the curators, we wanted to direct your attention to the surprisingly extensive activity in this field in the context of Ukrainian artistic circles from the late 90s up to this day. We decided to have a closer look at this phenomenon - says Micha│ Bieniek, the curator of visual arts of the European Capital of Culture Wroc│aw 2016.

The exhibition Dependence degree. Collective Practices of Young Ukrainian Artists 2000-2016 is devoted to four types of activities: single/short-term cooperation, stable collective projects, cooperation resulting from the process of forming artistic circles and the phenomenon of cooperation as such.

The curator of the project is the Open Group - one of the most famous artistic collectives from Ukraine. Its aim is to show the phenomenon of cooperation from the inside. The collective consists of four young artists - Yuriy Biley, Anton Varga, Stanislav Turina, Pavlo Kovach. The group was founded in 2012 and since that time it has gained recognition and prominence on the cultural map of Ukraine and neighboring countries. In 2015, the Open Group collective was awarded the main PinchukArtCentre Prize and took part in The Ukrainian National Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
