BWA Wrocław is a cultural institution financed by the city of Wrocław. Its main activity focuses on organising and presenting contemporary art exhibitions. It also shows interest in interaction between art and other areas of life as well as in search for the meaning of art in the social context.
It achieves its goals by arranging art shows, concerts, meetings and publishing projects. Due to its close geographical distance from Prague, Berlin and Leipzig BWA Wrocław is interested in creating local structures of art circulation within the area marked by these centres. Since 2009 it has issued BIURO (OFFICE), a propaganda organ of the BWA Galleries, artists from Wrocław and much more. The periodical is going to maintain its utopian character, to reveal ‘seams' of the Gallery’s projects, to make comments and to present new phenomena by avoiding the violence of 'discourses'.
BWA Wrocław consists of the following galleries: Awangarda (Avant-garde), Szkło I Ceramika (Glass and Ceramics), Design and Studio.

Awangarda | Wrocław, ul. Wita Stwosza 32 | daily except Mondays, opening hours: 11-18
Awangarda is the biggest BWA gallery in Wrocław. Its aim is to show and to make popular artists' current activities with the background of cultural problems. Awangarda presents classics of Polish contemporary art, thematic shows of domestic and European art, borders of visual art, theatre and film, performance and music. We are interested in the city and the authenticity of art, hence not only Geppert Competition for young painters, but also vj and street art projects come back to the gallery repeatedly.
The Awangarda building was designed by Carl Gotthard Langhans, the architect of The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, in the 18th century. After the war damages and reconstruction from the original building of the palace there remained only a portico, a piece of the ground level and parade stairs, now leading only to mezzanino, where the gallery library is situated.
Szkło i Ceramika | Wrocław, pl. Kościuszki9/10 | opening hours: Mon. - Fri. 11–18 | Sat. 11–15
Szkło i Ceramika is a minimal space presenting glass and ceramic works, unique objects, designs, installations made by contemporary artists with the innovative use of both materials. It is an experimental lab for young artists and at the same time the place where you can see and buy works by noticeable and renowned artists from home and abroad.<
Studio | Wrocław, ul. Ruska 46 a | Search Studio online: www.bwa.wroc.pl
Studio was a former workshop of BWA Wrocław, for some time now it has been an independent presenting, organising, exhibiting and workshop unit. It is a place of a quick reaction to the artists, activists and theoreticians' needs. The gallery aims at the artists born around 1980s, though the quality and attractiveness of its programme are more important than the generation’s manifesto. The atmosphere of a Berlin loft, the possibility of hammering nails wherever you wish, the lack of a posh atmosphere of vernissages mingle with refreshing thinking about art and theoretical reflection on contemporary times. Trends from Poland and abroad with an accent on the local context. Unfortunately you will not be able to find information about Studio's programme in any periodicals. Studio is open to visitors during vernissages and as indicated in invitations to the shows.
Design | Wrocław, ul. Świdnicka 2- 4 | opening hours: Mon. - Fri. 11–18 | Sat. 11–15
Design is placed right in the city centre. We act as 'a city carpet', walking beyond the physical space of the gallery. Into the city, into the country and far away. The gallery's new offer is 'expanded' design, critical towards culture of an object. We are interested in the ideas too brave for design shops. We deal with theory and practise, we support socially engaged projects. Young designers, masters of the matter and visionaries of the world's new order work for us.
Except for exhibitions at Design: holiday reading room, actions in the garden, film screenings and workshops. We show the reality at some angle and askance.
